Today we went to the county fair for some fairly cheap family entertainment. We paid $10 for my husband, 2 sons and me. As soon as we enter, we are greeted by dealerships for tractors, 4 wheelers, small backhoes…everything young boys love to climb on.

We head over to the animal buildings, where friends of ours had animals and they let our boys in the pen with the pigs. They felt like rock stars because of the special treatment! Plus Grandma helps out with the small animals at the fair and she gets some of the kids to pull their animals out of their pens for the boys to pet. It’s like a free personal petting zoo!

Next we have to walk through all the vendors, rides and games. Seeing all this, you would think my boys would be begging for that stuffed animal (that we all know will fall apart before we get home). But no, instead they are having fun searching for all the vendors handing out free stuff!

They were able to score frisbees, color changing pencils, balloons, cinch backpacks, bracelets…just to name a few. Then my husband scored some decals and pens with his favorite motor oil companies names on them. I was able to find reusable grocery bags and a couple free t-shirts that could get me entered into a drawing for a years worth of free gas if their employees saw me wearing it in public. I am game for that!

Grandma did spring for the boys to jump on the trampolines with bungees attached to them. My 4 year old Chase whispers, “Mom, I didn’t bring any money.”. I said, “That’s ok bud, Grandma said she would pay.” We thought that was so cute!

Most people spend a lot of money experiencing the fair, but we really enjoy going just to see the exhibits, animals and hunting for freebies! Interested in trying this with your family? Make it a scavenger hunt with the prize being a treat of their choice. Whether it’s a pick of the fair food, a ride or a game, it will give them something to work towards and still have fun in the process!
