One of my best friends just recently announced she’s expecting! I am so excited for her and can’t wait to meet the newest addition to their family! While I’m waiting, I look forward to watching her baby bump grow on our coffee dates. We like to try to meet once a week to have some time to chat about anything and everything.
But recently, our coffee dates came to a halt. She is having some pretty bad morning sickness. Not the kind that sends you running to the bathroom, the kind that makes your tummy feel crummy all. day. long. I’m hoping it lets up soon for her because I can’t imagine chasing her other kids around not feeling well.
I was picking some items up at Walmart and stumbled upon a demo they were having for McCafé coffee. Of course I had to stop and have a taste! As I was sampling, I saw quite a variety. There are 8 flavors to choose from for your single cup brewer or your traditional brewer. McCafé coffee is made with 100% Arabica beans. So you know it has to have good flavor!
I noticed decaf and my brain started brewing(yup, pun intended). I HAD to make my friend a gift basket! I grabbed a bag of decaf McCafé and wouldn’t you know it? There was a coupon on it! Definitely a score! Next, I went to the bakery and picked up some yummy blueberry breakfast loaves.
You can’t have coffee without a mug, so I headed over to the housewares section and looked at all the different ones. I saw a white one and decided to personalize it myself. I had seen a way to use permanent markers and bake it in to make it…permanent.
I also picked up some tissue paper and a basket to fit all the goods in. I was so excited to get started on the project!
As soon as I got home, I got out some paper towel, rubbing alcohol, black permanent marker and the mug. First, I wiped the mug all over with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt, oils or residues. After it was dry, I carefully picked it up, trying very hard to not touch where I was going to be working with my hands. I didn’t want to transfer new oils to the clean surface.
This is where it got fun(and frustrating). I started to free hand “Caffeine Free Until August 2015” on the mug and boy, did it look terrible! I was not in love with my handwriting at all. I knew I had gotten sloppy over the years, but this was unreal. Luckily, a few swipes of rubbing alcohol erased that mess and I got to start over. And over. And over. And over….
Fast forward an hour, I finally had something I could live with! I thought it was looking pretty cute, but it was still a little boring. I decided to try adding a footprint. That was the easiest part! Had I known how easy the footprints would be for me, I may have just made the mug full of them! Ha!
I let the marker dry for 24 hours, then put it in a cold oven, heated it to 450F and baked it for 30 minutes to set the marker in the mug’s glaze. After the 30 minutes, I left it in the oven with the door closed until everything was cool(probably about 6 hours or so).
I arranged everything in the gift basket and went to my friend’s house with the surprise. She loved it! We were able to sit and chat in the comfort of her home, not having to worry about her not feeling well enough to be out. And if she started feeling really yucky, I could just leave. Luckily, she was feeling pretty good, so we got a lot of girl time in!
